Two companies have been awarded contracts to provide equipment for East Midlands Railway’s new Class 805 and ‘807’ high-speed electric multiple units which will enter service in 2023.
Manufacturer Hitachi Rail has awarded the TPWS safety systems contract to Mors Smitt at Burton-on-Trent, while Forbo Flooring at Ripley is supplying the carpets.
Avanti are getting the 805 & 807 derivatives. EMR are getting 810s, which have shorter cars (24m per car as opposed to the standard 26m) and a revised boss profile in order that doubled-up units can fit into the platforms at St Pancras. The 810s will also have 4 Diesel engines in order to keep to Meridian (222) timings - standard AT300s have 3 engines.

These brand-new Hitachi Rail EMUs will replace East Midlands Railway's (EMR), Class 180 [built by Alstom] and Class 222 [built by Bombardier Transportation (now Alstom)] BMUs on the company's intercity routes. Their production process seems to take place in Hitachi Rail Europe's Newton Aycliffe manufacturing facility. EMR is a train operating company in England and is the current operator of the East Midlands franchise.
